Abstract

This project presents a Raspberry Pi-based assistive device designed to help visually impaired individuals access printed text using optical character recognition (OCR) and text-to-speech (TTS) technologies. By leveraging the Raspberry Pi Camera, the system captures images of textual content, which are then processed using Tesseract OCR to extract readable text. The recognized text is converted into speech using Google Text-to-Speech (gTTS), and played back using the pygame audio library. Interaction with the system is simplified through GPIO buttons for triggering image capture and audio playback, and feedback is provided via LED indicators. This compact, low-cost, and user-friendly device serves as a practical aid for the blind and visually impaired to independently access printed materials.
